After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams discovers that most of the world is suffering from a mysterious disease. Yet, despite his instincts for greater isolation, Ish leads the effort to develop a new civilization.
The novel was written in the late 1940s, after the end of World War II

The version on my shelf is copyrighted in 1947, but Wikipedia says 1949
The impact of the story is that 80 years ago, someone wrote about a global pandemic and its ultimate impact on people. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel helpless and defeated.
It relates closely to the poem Ozymandias
Those he encounters represent the ways people can cope with such enormous losses. The frailty of man and the courage of humanity in its achievements.
