When fate brings Belfast teacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed “lowlife scum”; Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on their hip hop work like nothing else. By rapping in their native Irish, they spearhead a movement to save their native tongue. As such, the two best friends in Belfast have regular run-ins with the police
One of them was arrested overnight because he claimed he only spoke Irish (Gaelic) and needed a translator to communicate with the police. These guys are low-level drug dealers who enthusiastically endorse their wares based on personal experience. Eventually, they call up a DJ and decide to form a hip-hop trio called Kneecap (a reference to the IRA practice of shooting drug dealers in the knee as punishment). Oh, and yes, they decide to have all the lyrics in Irish, which is not a shrewd business decision, given that only 1% of the Irish population (about 30,000 people) speak Irish on a regular basis. From the very beginning, Kneecap provides a constant manic energy, excitement and enthusiasm that flows through its crazy, chaotic and anarchic story in an irresistibly intoxicating way.

Oh, and yes, although liberties are taken – repeatedly and shamefully – this is basically a true story. The three main roles are played by three band members, none of whom have any previous acting experience. This project showcases the band’s refreshing willingness to be bold, brash, and brazen, while also showing a complete disregard for how their ideas, lyrics, or stories resonate with audiences. They discuss British colonialism (Irish-language primary schools were only allowed in 1972; the first Irish secondary school opened in 1991). They advocate for Irish to become an official language in Northern Ireland (which finally happened in 2022).
They provide graphic examples of police robbery
During the press conference, one of the band members was asked if he had any reservations about the level of drug use depicted throughout the film. His response: “No drugs were harmed in the making of this film.” In short, this film is a mess delivered with uncompromising honesty. Full disclosure, some elements of the story are fictional. For example, in the film Radical Republicans Against Drugs, the boys are threatened because they are drug dealers. In real life, Republic Action Against Drugs was founded in 2008 and eventually merged with the Real Irish Republic Army in 2012.
As you might have guessed, this is not a touchy-feely film
It’s a rewarding one for those hardy souls willing to put up with this onslaught of profanity, swearing and political incorrectness. Kudos to Rich Peppiatt, the British writer/director who helms this ironic, ironic manifesto. Here’s hoping Naoise Ó Cairelláin (aka Móglaí Bap), Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh (aka Mo Chara) and JJ Ó Dochartaigh (aka DJ Próvai) become household names – seriously. It’s sure to be an Irish contender for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Don’t be surprised if it’s nominated for Best Picture.
